The Fogo Island Regatta Steering Committee is organizing
the second annual Regatta for the summer of 2008. Events begin in June and culminate on
August 5, 2008.
The Regatta program begins June 7 (tentative) with the launch ceremony for 5 new locally built punts, one of which is being built by the students of Fogo Island Central Academy lead by master boat builder Mr. Melvin Combden.
The program continues throughout July and August with boat building demonstrations at the historic Fisherman’s Union premises in Seldom. This is a daily program with opportunities for visitors to experience the craft of wooden boat building and the great enjoyment of rowing a heritage collection punt in beautiful Seldom Harbour.
Also, throughout July and early August there are Harbour Races in each of the communities on Fogo Island and in Change Islands.
On August 5th the Regatta Day takes place in the Town of Fogo with a series of activities to provide great fun and enjoyment for participants and audiences alike. The highlight of the Regatta is The Great Fogo Island Punt Race to There and Back – a demanding and exciting challenge with crews racing from the canal in the town of Fogo to Change Islands and back; a total distance of approximately 10 miles of open ocean.
The Regatta compliments the area’s other great summer festivals.
